Dr. Bridget Harris, Veterinarian/Practice Owner
Dr. Bridget Harris has been practising veterinary medicine since 1983. She worked in numerous small animal clinics in Calgary until deciding to open up her own practice, Southwood Veterinary Hospital, in 2000. Dr. Harris is a very devoted practice owner who loves all aspects of veterinary medicine. She would like nothing more than to practice seven days a week. When she is not physically in the clinic she keeps in contact with her clients and staff.
Dr. Emily Ames, Veterinarian
Dr. Emily Ames graduated in the University of Calgary’s first veterinary class in 2012. She spent a year in mixed practice handling a variety of cases and patients but decided to start working completely indoors in 2013 and moved back to Calgary. She worked at a primary clinic downtown for a few years prior to coming here to join Bridget (also her mom) here at Southwood!
Dr. Alissa Gunderson, Veterinarian
Dr. Alissa Gunderson was born in Calgary and went to the University of Prince Edward Island for her undergraduate studies. She graduated from the University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine in 2013 with a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine. She spent several years in general and emergency medicine in both Calgary and Edmonton then switched gears and managed oncology patients full time for an additional 3 years. She is now finding a permanent new home at Southwood where she is excited to see pets of all ages and for all reasons! In her spare time, she enjoys outdoor activities, cooking, running, and reading. She spends most of her free times with her two cats and Golden Retriever.
Dr. Andrew Costa, Veterinarian
Dr. Andrew Costa has worked in the veterinary industry for over 14 years. He completed his undergraduate study in Austin at the University of Texas in 2007. He then spent 28 sunny (occasionally hurricane-filled) months on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts while attending veterinary school at Ross University and graduating with highest honors. He also earned the Pfizer Animal Health Award of Parasitology in 2009. Dr. Costa worked in emergency practice until 2015, where he gained experience with many complex diseases as well as a wide variety of surgeries. He then transitioned into general practice and began working as a locum for various hospitals around the greater Calgary area. The transition to primary care allowed Dr. Costa to further develop his relationships with clients and patients. His primary veterinary interests are internal medicine and soft tissue surgery. He has a strong focus on preventive healthcare with regular physical exams as this helps detect problems and disease early and improve the quality and length of your pet’s life. Dr. Costa is an active member of the Calgary Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Costa has owned/fostered pets his whole life including cats, dogs, and even an iguana! His pet family currently includes 2 cats, Lenny and Carl. When not working, Dr. Costa spends most of his time with the 2 loves of his life, his beautiful fiancé and young daughter! He also enjoys most sports, especially football, and any spare time outdoors golfing, camping, and hiking. Despite an extensive background in warm and tropical climates, hockey and snowboarding are favorite activities of his as well.
Courtney Nelson, Registered Veterinary Technologist
Courtney has been an Animal Health Technologist for 13 years (and counting!) She began working with Southwood Veterinary Hospital almost immediately following her graduation from Fairview College in 2004. Courtney’s nurturing and empathetic nature make her a well-suited nurse for all of our patients, especially those who require hospitalization. Courtney has one cat of her own; ‘Sophie’ who was rescued as a kitten and has proven to be an irreplaceable member of the family. The aspect of being an AHT that Courtney enjoys the most is the rewarding feeling she receives from knowing that she is helping to make a difference in the lives of our clients and their pets.
Tiffany Davis, Registered Veterinary Technologist
Tiffany has been working in the Veterinary industry since 2013; she began her career once traveling to Calgary from Ontario. Tiffany decided to further her education and just finished her undergrad in the Animal Health Technologist program at Thompson Rivers University. She comes to this industry with a kind heart, passion and dedication in making a positive difference in animal’s lives.
Nicole McIntyre, Registered Veterinary Technologist
Nicole has recently graduated from the Animal Health Technology program at Olds College in 2018. She joined Southwood Veterinary Hospital part time in 2017 as a summer student and is now back full time! As a "Baby Tech" Nicole is eager to learn and will always accept new challenges. She's rewarded with knowing she is helping our patients and clients with her hard work and dedication. Nicole has a very special place in her heart for cats (especially the grey ones) and loves spending quality time with her cat Chloe when she is not at work
Jessie Saboe, Registered Veterinary Technologist
Jessie graduated from the Olds College Animal Health Technology Program in 2016. She has been with us here at Southwood since January 2018 and we are happy to have her. She enjoys connecting with our clients and patients with her caring and empathetic demeanor. In her downtime, she enjoys cuddling with her cat Whiskey and playing with her Mini Australian Shepherd Tesla.
Felicia Riccio, Receptionist
Felicia came to Southwood Veterinary Hospital in 2015 with a Veterinary Office Assistant Certificate of which she graduated in 2011 with Honours. She worked at a busy 24hr Emergency and Primary Care Hospital in the north end of Calgary. She comes with a positive attitude and great multitasking skills making her a great contribution to the Southwood team.In her down time she enjoys hanging out with her Golden Retriever, Jackson. She has loved getting to know all of our clients and their furry friends.
Alicia Knight, Receptionist
Alicia “Ali” Graduated top of her class for the Veterinary Office Assistant program at Bow Valley College in 2013, she was recognized as the face of the program and was featured on the front page of the Bow Valley Business Magazine. She is very excited to start building a continuous relationship with all the wonderful clients and their fur-babies at Southwood Vet. On her downtime she enjoys spending time playing fetch with her rescue Border collie mix named Zelgius and cuddling with her pleasantly plump rescue cat Butters.
Jenn Marshall, Receptionist
Jenn came to Southwood in early May 2019, she graduated from Lakeland collage with her Veterinary Medical Assistant in 2013. After working at a busy 24hr emergency clinic she left the vet industry for a few years until coming to Southwood. When Jenn isn’t working, she is spending her time with Piper her stubborn Basset hound and her bird Charlie a yellow sided green cheek conure.
Shannon Barratt, Receptionist
Shannon was previously employed in the finance industry for almost 14 years. In 2019 she decided to finally make the change and pursue her lifelong passion in caring for animals. Shannon recently graduated from Robertson College where she was at the top of her class in the Veterinary Office and Technician Assistant program. She loves spending her time outdoors and doing anything that involves her four-legged best friend Twig.

Ashley Hadala, Veterinary Student
Ashley is currently enrolled in the University of Calgary Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program (Class of 2023); she has completed her Undergraduate Degree with distinction in Biological Science at the University of Calgary. She has a profound passion for animals and a fascination with the medical sciences behind it. Ashley started at Southwood Veterinary Hospital in 2017 as a kennel assistant and now works part-time as a DVM student. She really enjoys being in clinic and cuddling with all of the fur babies that come through our doors. During her spare time, Ashley loves hanging out with her orange tabby cat Bodhi who is full of personality!
Crystal Proctor, Inventory Coordinator
Crystal is a huge animal lover! She was born into a dog show family and involved with breeding and raising them. Crystal’s years of retail management experience has made her a valuable member to our team, in both customer service and inventory control. When she is not working she enjoys spending time camping and hiking with her husband, daughter and lab Hunter.
